Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has challenged engineers at Metro Mass Transit Limited to ensure that buses under their care do not break down, stressing that efficient maintenance is critical to improving public transport services in Ghana.

‎She made the call during her visit to Metro Mass Transit Limited at Kaneshie in Accra, on Friday January 16, 2026, where she interacted with management and staff of the state-owned transport company.

‎The Vice President expressed concern over the significant reduction in the number of operational buses, noting that Metro Mass once operated about 1,000 buses but is now working with just over 400, despite an increase in the country’s population.

‎“How did all the buses break down? How did we move from about 1,000 buses to just over 400?” she asked, describing the situation as unacceptable and in need of urgent correction.

‎Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the Kaneshie facility should be a place where buses are properly maintained and kept in good condition, adding that frequent breakdowns point to deeper challenges that must be addressed.

‎She stressed that Ghana has invested heavily in training engineers and mechanics and called on management to support them with the right tools and working conditions to deliver results.

‎The Vice President commended staff for doing their best with limited resources but said operating at about 60 percent capacity cannot meet the transport needs of a growing population.

‎She assured workers that government is willing to play its role by supporting Metro Mass with additional buses over time and urged staff to take good care of government property, describing it as property that belongs to all Ghanaians.

‎Prof. Opoku-Agyemang encouraged management and workers to remain focused, work together, and do even more to improve public transport services for commuters across the country.
