AWW by-election violence anniversary: Police denies reports; says it did not provide security

The Accra Regional Police Command says reports that it did not provide security for the one-year commemorative durbar of the Ayawaso West Wuogon (AWW) By-election violence is not true.

A statement from the Public Affairs Unit and signed by DSP Afia Tenge said security was duly provided for the event.

The statement said the Airport Divisional Command led three other support teams from the Regional Operations Counter Terrorism Unit and SWAT to the event.

The statement said there were also personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department, Operation Calm Life and MTTD officers.

Prior to this, a ten-member Military standby force was positioned at a tactical location to offer the needed assistance when necessary.

These security arrangements according to the statement were mainly to ward off criminal elements who may take advantage to foment trouble and ensure adequate security before, during and after the event.

The statement assured Political Parties and the Public that it will remain impartial in the discharge of its duty to provide security for all.
