Baba Jamal Mohamed Ahmed has been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency following his victory in a recent by-election.
The swearing-in ceremony took place in Parliament on Tuesday, where the oath of office was administered by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
Mr Jamal’s return to Parliament follows a by-election held after the death of the former Member of Parliament for the constituency.
Before contesting the seat, he resigned from his position as Ghana’s ambassador to Nigeria to participate in the parliamentary primary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he won.
The primary election, held on 7 February, drew significant political attention following allegations of vote-buying during the process.
Administering the oath, Mr Bagbin reminded the new MP of his responsibility to serve the people of the constituency and the country.
“You voluntarily offered yourself to serve the good people of the Ayawaso East Constituency. In your campaign, you stated that you want to serve them as a Member of Parliament,” the Speaker said.
He added that Mr Jamal would be held accountable to the constituents he now represents in Parliament.
Mr Jamal previously served as Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency from 2009 to 2013.
