The Chief of Chereponi in the Northern region has stopped the voter registration exercise on the upcoming referendum for the creation of new regions.
Radio Ghana’s regional correspondent, Mutala Issa reports that, the Chereponi chief does not want his people to take part in the limited registration because he does not want to be part of the North East region which is expected to be created out of the Northern region after the referendum.
The Northern region is divided into three sub regions, Savanna region, Northern region and North Eastern region and Chereponi is one of the districts that is to be added to the North East region after the referendum and the chiefs are not in support of it.
They have said the people of Chereponi pay allegiance to the Yaa Naa of the Dagbon Kingdom and will not shift their loyalty to Naa Yili of the Mamprugu Kingdom.
According to the Mutala, one of the chiefs of Chereponi, on Sunday, told him the Naa Yili who is leading the crusade to get the North East region did not consult the chiefs of Chereponi and feel disrespected.
Mutala reports that, the district will go on a District Security Council meeting Monday, September 17, on the matter to find an amicable solution to the situation.
