Ghana launches program to train Assembly Members

To ensure accountability and also deepen the principles of decentralization among Metropolitan Municipal, and District Assemblies, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has instituted a capacity building programme for Assembly members across the country.

Speaking at the launch of the program, the Sector Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama, said the training will continue in all the regions in line with government’s plans to empower the Assemblies to discharge their duties professionally.

The training for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, MMDA’s was initiated by the President to fulfil section 5(16) of the Local Government Act, 2016, Act 936.

The two-day nationwide activity is targeted to have 9,083 participants from the 260 MMDAs in the country. The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama said the programme will cover seven modules aimed at enhancing the knowledge of Assembly members on their responsibilities.

The Director of the Institute for Local Government Studies, Nicholas Awortwi said a new training programme on entrepreneurship will be introduced to enhance Assembly Members knowledge in leadership and the creation of job opportunities for their communities.

The training which began on the fifth of August has already seen 1,919 Assembly members benefiting from 53 Assemblies.
