A Senior Research fellow at the Institute of Democratic Governance, IDEG Kwesi Jonah has called on the 8th Parliament expected to be inaugurated on January 7 next year, to institute special rules and regulations to determine how deadlocks should be broken when voting on bills in parliament.

He told GBC’s Radio Ghana that Ghana is in uncharted waters regarding the composition of parliament, hence special arrangements need to be put in place to ensure smooth governance.

Mr. Jonah raised concerns that the Executive arm of government is likely to be disadvantaged because majority of the NPP MPs in the next parliament, who are likely to be Ministers may not be available to vote on bills due to their busy schedule.

Currently, the Parliament of the 4th Republic has clinched 137 members from the two political divide, a historic moment which calls for introspection.

However, Imani Ghana’s Franklin Cudjoe says it is a welcome opportunity for the country’s Democracy to grow.

According to Mr Cudjoe, the new composition of Parliament is a moment for Ghana’s legislature to work together for the overall development of the country instead of the winner takes all phenomenon.

Mr. Cudjoe said 2021 requires an all hands on deck approach to prosecute the development Agenda of the country and asked all CSO’s and interest groups to come on board to support the legislature to develop mother Ghana.
