Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu says government will continue to engage relevant stakeholders on the controversial E. Levy Bill before Parliament. The House failed to pass the Bill before adjourning for the Christmas and New Year break after a free-for-all fight broke out in the Chamber.
Many, including CSO’s and governance experts, want the Bill to be withdrawn for further consultation as was done in the case of the introduction of the VAT in 1995 under Former President Rawlings. Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu says engagements with the Telco’s so far are yielding positive results.
On the remote cause of the fight, the Majority Leader accused the Speaker of Parliament of attempting to stall government business because the Finance Ministry refused to allocate 1.72 billion Ghana cedis to Parliament.
Mr. Kyei Mensah Bonsu called for a reorientation of MPs in view of recent developments in the House. He expressed concern about the development in Parliament which has affected Ghana’s image internationally.
