A member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah ESQ, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to clearly state his government’s position on the LGBTQ+ Bill, following recent comments that the issue is not a priority for Ghana.
Speaking in an interview on GTV Breakfast Show on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, Mr. Jantuah said the President must come again and give Ghanaians clarification to avoid uncertainty and possible tension between key arms of government.
Despite the President stating in a meeting with civil society organisations (CSOs) on Monday, March 30, 2026, that the LGBTQ+ Bill is not a priority, describing it as sensitive and emotionally charged, Lawyer Jantuah stated that there is still a need for a definite position, especially as Parliament continues to show interest in the matter.
“There is something about the LGBTQ issues. I think the President should come again and give us clarification,” he said. “We know that the Speaker is bent on passing this law. If it then comes to the President, is he going to sign it, or is he going to delay? We need clarification on that particular aspect.”
Mr. Jantuah questioned whether the issue is a priority for the government, the ruling party, or the country as a whole, stressing that such ambiguity could confuse the public.
“If you are saying now that it is not a priority, is it not a priority for the party? Is it a priority for him? Is it a priority for the government? Is it not a priority for the country?” he asked.
He further warned that a lack of clear direction could create unnecessary tension between the Executive and the Legislature, particularly if the Speaker pushes the Bill forward.
“If the Speaker is pushing it, you don’t want conflict between the Speaker and the President on the LGBTQ issue,” he added.
The comments come amid ongoing national discussions on the controversial LGBTQ+ Bill and its future, as Ghanaians await a clear stance from the government.
