Government has denied claims by National Democratic Congress (NDC) that it approved the recent importation of a large cache of arms into the country.

The opposition party in a recent statement raised the alarm that the Akufo-Addo administration had authorised the importation of the weapons at a time the country was grappling with threats of terrorism.

Government however says it can confirm that the Mahama Administration under the NDC rather issued permit for the importation of the arms before leaving office in January 2017.

Supporting the claim with the letter authorising the imports, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, told Journalists in Accra that the permit was signed by the then Deputy Minister for the Interior, James Agalga on 5th January, 2017.

Meanwhile, Mr Agalga in response to the accusation says government is missing the point altogether.

He said the Minister of Information should be telling Ghanaians when an import licence was issued to the said company to import the arms and ammunition.

Mr Agalga said while he does not readily recall signing any such authorization for the importation of the arms, if he did at all, it was done within the law and under careful security consideration.

He however said, since the current security situation is not conducive for the presence of such large cache of arms, what the NDC had raised as an issue was not about the legality of the import but that care should be taken so the guns do not end up in the wrong hands.
