Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed concern about the rising debt stock under President Akufo-Addo’s government especially as there is very little to show for the loans taken.

Addressing residents of Kakasunaka in the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, as part of his campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Mahama said government has since 2017 borrowed 157 billion cedis, thereby increasing the debt to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio to an unprecedented 76.7%.

He said the recommended debt to profile for a middle-income country should not be more than 60%.

Mr. Mahama was surprised at the ballooning national debt stock in view of attacks on his tenure and pledges by the then opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that it was capable of developing the country without loans.

Mr. Mahama said his government developed the country with 56 billion Cedis in loans received, adding that the evidence can be seen all over the country.

He urged Ghanaians to make the right decision by voting for the NDC to win the elections and create opportunities and prosperity for all.
