Senior Communicator for the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has cast doubt on claims by the two leading political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), that they command overwhelming membership across the country.
Speaking on GTV’s Current Agenda, Mr. Owusu insisted that neither party can boast of more than two million committed members.
“Absolutely none of the two parties… none of them have a membership of more than two million. At best, they have about 500,000 registered members. What they are using to claim big numbers is the outcome of elections.”
He argued that much of the electoral support for both NPP and NDC comes from floating voters rather than firm party loyalists.
“In the last election, the NDC had floating voters. It is the same thing with the NPP. If you check, their core members are far fewer.”
Mr. Owusu said the Movement for Change will not allow Ghana’s politics to continue revolving around the two dominant parties, insisting that civil society, religious groups, and the media must play a role in shaping alternatives.
“We are not going to allow the media and state institutions to settle only around these two political parties. The country deserves more.”
The Movement for Change has positioned itself as a third force ahead of the next general elections, arguing that Ghana’s democracy will only grow if voters look beyond the NPP and NDC.
