Running Mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has made some allegations against John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) flagbearer for openly encouraging galamsey.

In an interview on the GTV Breakfast Show, October 25, 2024, Dr. Prempeh claimed that Mahama’s government was the only one in Ghana’s history to openly encourage illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

“The only government ever in the history of this country who has openly encouraged illegal mining activities is John Dramani Mahama,” Dr. Prempeh stated. He emphasized that Mahama’s past actions clearly show that he supported galamsey.

NAPO also claimed AngloGold Ashanti, a major mining company, reached out to President Mahama for help in dealing with illegal miners, but he didn’t take any action. “AngloGold sent an SOS to President Dramani Mahama, but he didn’t listen. They even sent an SOS through the Ashanti hene to the President, but what was his comment?” He asked rhetorically.
