The Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Josephine Nkrumah has urged the Ghana Police Service to constantly provide the public with updates on investigations into the recent killings, in order not to lose public confidence in its ability to resolve them.

According to her, while appreciating the fact that sometimes with investigations of that nature, there is the need to remain confidential, there is also a corresponding need to keep the public abreast of some development, to indicate that the Service was on top of the situation.

Madam Nkrumah said as a country, it is necessary to ensure that Ghanaians live in peace, harmony and in an atmosphere, devoid of fears.

For that matter, “the people need to understand what the police is doing basically for Ghanaians to have confidence in them that they are up to the task of unraveling these gruesome acts and able to bring the perpetrators to book.”

She said largely, Ghana had been seen as a safe haven in sub-Sahara Africa and that, the way the police approached the investigations into the deaths would go to either detract or add to the country’s democratic credentials.

Madam Nkrumah was of the view that there had been a bit of a communication gap with regards to the provision of timely information by the police to the public probably because they were on a certain trail and therefore it was better that they kept certain matters confidential, “but at least something that comes from the police to make Ghanaians understand that they are on top of the situation would be appreciated.”
