A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the two major political parties in the Asawase constituency in Ashanti, NPP and NDC, to ensure peaceful polls come December 7.

This follows hours of deliberations with the National Peace Council Mediation team and opinion leaders of the constituency.

The signing of the MOU follows tensions that characterised the just ended voter registration in that constituency.

Chairman of the National Peace Council Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante emphasized the need for political parties to work together for sustainable peace in the country, adding that, the very people whose mandate they sought would suffer the consequences of electoral violence.

As key stakeholders competing to lead the development of the country, politicians, he said, owe citizens the duty of prioritising national interest ahead of their party’s.

Professor Asante expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the deliberations.

Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Peace Council, Rev. Christopher Nyarko Andam led the two parties to sign the MoU.

He explained that even though there was some reluctance on the parts of the parties, they eventually signed the MOU under conditions.

He asked the media to be circumspect in their reportage to ensure peace among the parties.
