The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region has sanctioned 16 party officials and members from the Pusiga and Tempane constituencies for various acts of misconduct linked to the 2024 general elections.
In a statement issued by Regional Chairman Anthony Namoo on August 1, 2025, the party explained that the action follows the conclusion of a thorough investigation led by the Regional Disciplinary Committee. The probe began in January 2025, with hearings conducted in March and final decisions reached in June.
Among those affected is Sawuda Bilgumsey, the party’s 2nd Vice Chairman, who has been dismissed and barred from holding any party position until he repays party funds alleged to have been misused. The NPP emphasized that this move demonstrates its strong stance on financial discipline and ethical governance.
Breakdown of sanctions
The penalties handed out vary according to the severity of each case:
- Five-Year Ban: Six executives, including 1st Vice Chairman Musah Awudu and Treasurer Jacob Akazusah, have been removed and disqualified from holding any party office for the next five years due to serious breaches of party rules.
- Four-Year Ban: One constituency coordinator has been dismissed and barred from all party activities for four years.
- Three-Year Ban: Eight members, comprising polling station officials and other party affiliates, have been suspended from their roles for three years.
Notably, not everyone accused was found culpable. Salifu Ibn Adams, who serves as the Constituency Research and Elections Officer, was among five individuals cleared of all allegations and acquitted by the committee.
Commitment to internal discipline
The Regional Executive Committee reiterated that the disciplinary measures were necessary to protect the integrity of the party and reinforce a culture of accountability.
“This action reflects our resolve to ensure discipline within our ranks and uphold the values that define the NPP,” the statement noted.
To maintain operational continuity, the party has ordered that all vacant positions created as a result of the sanctions be filled immediately.
As the NPP moves forward, the leadership has reaffirmed its commitment to ethical standards, responsible conduct, and transparency within the party, especially as it prepares for future political engagements.
