The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has warned against the use of strongmen—often referred to as “macho” men—or private security groups during the NPP presidential primaries.
In a light note, he remarked that the police are more “macho” than any macho men individuals may deploy.
Speaking during the signing of a peace pact by the five presidential aspirants on Thursday, January 22, 2026, IGP Yohunu stressed that law enforcement will not tolerate any form of unauthorised security presence at polling stations on election day, scheduled for January 31, 2026.
According to him, intelligence gathered from social media and reports forwarded to him by party leaders indicate that some individuals are planning to deploy vigilante-style groups to influence proceedings. He cautioned that such actions could undermine public order and lead to arrests.
IGP Yohunu further emphasised that police officers are fully prepared to handle security arrangements professionally and peacefully, noting that private groups often disregard cautionary directives from authorities. He warned that individuals who flout the law will be arrested and dealt with accordingly, adding that responsibility will not be shifted onto police commanders after enforcement actions are taken.
Reassuring political actors and the public, he added that the police are ready to provide a peaceful and credible security environment throughout the election process.
He urged all parties to cooperate with security agencies and refrain from actions that could jeopardise peace, security, and public confidence in the process.
