Probe events surrounding election of Speaker of 8th Parliament – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling on the leadership of Parliament to probe events surrounding the election of the Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic.

General Secretary of the Party, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah, at a news conference in Accra, described the happenings in the House including the attempt by the Clerk to prevent NDC MP for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson from voting for the Speaker as shameful and un-parliamentary.

He said the open voting by New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, the deployment of soldiers into  the Chamber and snatching of ballot papers by the Tema West MP, Carlos Ahenkra are all undemocratic.

The General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Aseidu Nketia said all happenings on the floor of Parliament on the midnight and morning the 7th of January has brought shame to Ghana and on the international community.

He said it also showed what was orchestrated by the Akufo-Addo led government during the collation of results in some parts of the country after the general election.

He said the NDC as a party, will not recognise Nana Akufo-Addo as President of the Republic of Ghana until the issues surrounding the election results are resolved.

He showed a brochure, which is evidence of an initial printing of Prof. Mike Oquaye as the Speaker of Parliament before the amendment of the picture of Mr. Bagbin on top of the Prof Ocquaye.
