The Chief Executive Officer the Bureau of Public Safety, Nana Yaw Akwada, has called for a robust and aggressive retooling of the Ghana Police Service to deliver on its mandate of protecting the citizenry.

He noted that recent security situations in the country call for some radical reforms and investment in state-of-the-art science and technology to position the police to adequately deal with sophisticated crime.

Speaking on GBC’s current Affairs programme, ‘Focus’, on Uniiq FM in Accra, Mr. Akwada said recent statistics have indicated an upsurge in crime cases. This he noted is heightening fear and insecurity among the populace.

The Director of Public Affairs at the Police Headquarters, Sheilla Abayie-Buckman, said the Police Service is on top of its duties to ensure that citizens go about their normal activities despite recent high profile killings.

She said the use of the media to create fear and panic should not be encouraged.

A Foreign Policy and Security Analyst, Adib Saani, asked government to equip the police service with functioning DNA finger print data base that will help in arresting suspects.

The Director of Operations at the Criminal Investigation Department, ACP Joseph Oklu who was also on the programme urged Ghanaians to be patient with the Police in attempt to arrest and prosecute suspects.

He entreated the public to take steps to secure their own personal safety.
