The Upper East Regional Security Council has convened an emergency meeting following Wednesday’s mine explosion that killed 16 miners at Gbane in the Talensi District.

The Medical Director at the Bolgatanga Hospital, Dr Patrick Atobrah, said some of the victims who are currently receiving treatment at the Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga are in dire need of oxygen.

A family member of one of the deceased, Samuel Bugri Saapak says he is suspecting foul play.

Minewhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Abraham Otabil, says officials of the Ministry, are on their way to the site of the mine explosion.

Mr. Otabil in an interview with GBC Radio said investigations into the explosion are underway.

In a related development, management of Shaanxi Mining Company in the Upper East Region has been directed to suspend all mining operations at Gbane with immediate effect, pending investigations into a tragic accident at the mines Wednesday.

The directive from the Minerals Commission follows the death of sixteen people in an explosion at the mining site.

The company says it will obey the directive.  Speaking to GBC Radio, the DCE for Talensi, Dr. Christopher Boatbill, said he has tasked the security agencies to investigate the incident.
