Voting is currently underway in the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region as constituents head to the polls for a crucial by-election today, Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
All 119 polling stations opened on time, with electoral officers and security personnel deployed to ensure a smooth, orderly, and transparent voting process.
The by-election has generated significant public and political interest after the death of the incumbent MP, Ernest Kumi.

A total of 52,328 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots.

The main contenders are Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernard Bediako Baidoo from the camp of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Akwatia remains one of Ghana’s most competitive constituencies, having historically swung between the NDC and NPP.
Meanwhile, to ensure a peaceful and successful election, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,000 officers across the constituency to safeguard the voting process. Security measures include the establishment of multiple checkpoints and restricted access to the collation centre.
Security agencies have urged voters to comply with electoral guidelines and maintain peace throughout the process.

The EC is expected to begin counting and collation immediately after polls close at 5:00 PM.
