The Ashanti Region recorded 2,699 road accidents last year, 18 per cent more than the 2017 figure of 2,286.

The Regional Head of the National Road Safety Commission, Simbiat Wiredu, told GBC’s Radio Ghana in Kumasi that the accidents left 395 dead.

Madam Wiredu said there was 21 per cent increase in the number of vehicles involved in the crashes.

Explaining the upward trend in cases of road crashes despite increased public education over the years, the Regional Head of the Road Safety Commission, blamed the situation on several factors, including the influx of tricycles commonly known as ‘Pragia’ for commercial operations in the region.

These ‘Pragia’ drivers, like most riders of motorcycles, refuse to comply with road safety regulations, while drivers also have little or no consideration for pedestrians and other road users.
