Aspirant in the Ayawaso East National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has dismissed suggestions that items distributed to delegates during voting were intended to influence the outcome of the contest.

Speaking in an interview on Saturday, February 7, 2026, Baba Jamal explained that the 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs shared by his campaign team were simply gifts to delegates and should not be misconstrued as inducements.

According to him, delegates are mature party members capable of making independent decisions, stressing that the items given out would not affect how they cast their ballots.

The comments come after Baba Jamal’s campaign team distributed television sets to delegates at the polling centre, alongside free boiled eggs, as voting got underway at the Ayawaso East NDC primary.

The party is holding the primary to select a parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election, following the death of the late Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.

Five aspirants are contesting the seat: Mohammed Ramme, the NDC Constituency Chairman; Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late MP; Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria; Dr Yakubu Azindow; and Najib Mohammed.

Voting continues as delegates decide who will represent the NDC in the Ayawaso East by-election.
