Residents in the Vieri and Varimpere communities are appealing to the Wa West District Assembly to go to their aid by establishing a permanent police post to curtail what they termed as the sudden increase in robbery activities on the road linking the 2 communities.

Residents say that the past few weeks, more than five robberies have occurred among which include an attack on a businessman in his shop on 23rd December last year around the Vieri market. The residents say the robbers made away with a substantial amount of money.

Speaking at the 3rd annual Seontaa Boor festival, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mathias Gangana, said the persistent robberies have led to heightened insecurities among residents.

“It will surprise you to know that they [the robbers] even attack people in their homes. On the 23rd of December 2019, a businessman located at the Vieri Market area was robbed of his money in his shop and home around 7pm. The insecurity is now too alarming,” he said.

The Seontaa Boor festival is celebrated by the Daga-Willie communities in the Wa Municipality and the Wa West District. The festival aims at fostering unity while promoting the adoption of the culture of the Daga-Willie. The Chairman of the festival Planning Committee, Mathias Gangana said it was unfortunate the youth had shunned the rich culture of the Daga-Willie in favor of foreign culture.

Mr Gangana used the platform to thank the Wa West District Assembly for connecting Vieri to the national electricity grid and constructing a 6 unit Primary School Block for Yeleyiri. The Chairman was however unhappy that road construction on the Varimpere-Vieri-Tambaar road had halted. He appealed to the District Assembly to quicken the construction of the road.

“Though we saw that government has tarred the road from Wa through Nakore and Chansa to Varimpere, the promise that the construction will include the road from Varimpere through Vieri to Tambaar seems not to be the case as the contractor stopped at Varimpere,” Mr Gangana explained.

The Chairman of the Festival Planning Committee also decried the neglect of the Daga-Willie in the distribution of government social interventions saying they have “generally observed that our people [Daga-Willie] are often neglected when it comes to the distribution of government social interventions namely MASLOC, establishment of cashew plantation, youth employment, scholarships, One District One Factory, One Village One Dam and the Planting for Food and Jobs”.

Mr Gangana urged government to consider setting up a tomato processing factory in the area as the it produces a lot of tomatoes all year round.

The festival was attended by the DCE for the Wa West District Edward Labiir Sabo, the MP for Wa Central Dr Rashid Hassan Pelpuo and the NDC Parliament Parliamentary candidate for Wa West Supt. Peter Lanchene Tuubu.
