Lack of potable water has compelled residents of Kanaase No.1, a farming community in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region to compete with animals for drinking water. The inhabitants depend on the unsafe water from River Tain, which also serves as source of drinking water for livestock.

GBC’s Daniel Donkor reports that it was a sorrowful sight as he witnessed women and children fetching the unsafe water from River Tain and drinking it directly without purifying it, whiles they also use for cooking and other household chores. They are therefore calling on the authorities, philanthropist, NGOs and the government to go to their aid in getting them portable water.

Kanaase No. 1 lacks basic amenities and potable water is on the top list. The about 400 residents of Kanaase No.1, a farming community near Agubie in the Wenchi Municipality, do not have access to clean and potable water.

The inhabitants share their only source of water with animals, a situation that leaves much to be desired. A visit to the community revealed that their only source of drinking, which is the Tain river is not hygienic as the water has become yellowish and full of unwanted particles.

A search also revealed that one could walk about 3 kilometers to Kanaase No.2 before he/she could get access to potable water to drink.

In an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana, the people expressed worry at their plight as they alleged the water is often polluted by human activities.

“These animals like, goats, sheeps, cattles among others defecate and urinate into the water which we also drink,” they stated. “We are calling on our MCE, MP, NGOs, the government and individuals to help us with just one borehole for us to get safe water to drink,” they added.

The newly sworn in assembly member of the area, Emmanuel Kwaku Dokyi, tells GBC’s Radio Ghana, he will lobby at the assembly level for Kanaase No.1 to have access to clean water.

When contacted, the Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive, Dr. Prince Kwakye Afriyie said the development is a gradual process hence he will ensure Kanaase No.1 gets safe water this year.
