Ghana defender Derrick Luckassen has replaced Alexander Djiku’s in the Black Stars pre World Cup squad, unless there is an unexpected late change. The move comes after Djiku picked up an injury that is likely to keep him out of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Luckassen, who made his senior Ghana debut in the March friendly against Germany, has now emerged as the frontrunner to fill the gap in Carlos Queiroz’s team. The 30-year-old earned strong recognition this season for his performances with Pafos FC in Cyprus, where he played a major role in both domestic competition and European matches.

His showing in the UEFA Champions League, where he made eight appearances and scored once, has further strengthened his case for a place in the final squad. Ghana’s technical team has reportedly been impressed by his consistency, leadership and ability to operate across the back line.

Sources close to the team suggest that Luckassen is expected to join the Black Stars in the United States once the final squad changes are completed. His addition would give Ghana extra experience and depth at a time when defensive stability is a major concern.

With Djiku’s absence creating a big hole in defence, Luckassen now has a major opportunity to establish himself on football’s biggest stage. Ghana will continue their preparations with a friendly against Wales on Tuesday before shifting full focus to the World Cup.
