A National Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) taskforce conducting operations in the Eastern Region has carried out a successful raid on an illegal mining site at Asuom in the Kwaebibirem District.
The operation, which took place at about 0120 hours, uncovered active illegal mining activities along a stream known as Nukuru, located within a palm plantation. The stream flows directly into the Birim River, one of the region’s critical water bodies currently under threat from galamsey activities.
During the raid, the taskforce arrested six Chinese nationals and one Ghanaian engaged in the illegal activity. The team also seized an excavator, several vehicles, and assorted mining equipment found on the site. Additionally, a number of makeshift structures erected by the miners were demolished.

NAIMOS says the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities that continue to endanger Ghana’s environment and water resources.
