Football officiating has become a pivotal focus in Ghana’s broader efforts to elevate its sports industry and nurture grassroots talent. Central to this vision is the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) innovative ‘Catch Them Young’ programme, designed to identify, train, and inspire young individuals to become the referees of tomorrow. This initiative aims not only to develop technical skills but also to instill the ethics and integrity essential for the growth of Ghanaian football at all levels.

Among the promising talents emerging from this programme is seven-year-old Asomaniwaa Akoto Akrofi, a young girl whose confidence and passion for officiating have captured national attention.

A pupil at Pentecost Preparatory School, Asomaniwaa recently stepped into the spotlight during the group-stage matches of the FIFA Women’s Football Campaign held at Koforidua Technical University. Her poised demeanor and enthusiasm on the pitch have set her apart from her peers, demonstrating natural talent and a deep love for the game.

Asomaniwaa’s journey into officiating began only a few months ago, yet her dedication is already evident. Inspired by her older brother, a football player, she decided to take up the whistle and make her own mark in the sport. Her willingness to learn and fearless approach have left a lasting impression on spectators, coaches, and officials. Many see her as a beacon of hope for the future of football officiating in Ghana—a testament to how age is no barrier to ambition.

Her story underscores a powerful message: with passion, determination, and support, even the youngest among us can aspire to greatness. Asomaniwaa’s enthusiasm not only inspires other young girls to pursue their dreams in football—whether on the field or as referees—but also highlights the importance of nurturing talent from an early age. Her example exemplifies the potential of the ‘Catch Them Young’ initiative to develop a new generation of skilled, dedicated referees who will uphold Ghana’s football integrity.

With Ghana’s gradual investment in sports and talent development, stories like Asomaniwaa’s serve as a reminder that the future of Ghanaian football is bright. The ‘Catch Them Young’ programme is a crucial step forward, promising to produce a cadre of referees who will uphold the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship for years to come.
