Koforidua Hockey Club emerged champions of the third Johnson Ofori Memorial Hockey Tournament held at the Ho Sports Stadium on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

The annual competition, organised by the Volta Regional Hockey Association, is held in honour of the late Mr Johnson Ofori for his major contribution to the development of hockey in the region.

Four clubs, Ho Hockey Club, Koforidua Hockey Club, Citizens International Hockey Club, and Suhum Hockey Club participated in this year’s edition.

Koforidua Hockey Club delivered an incredibly dominant performance, winning all three of their matches to finish with a maximum of nine points.

They scored nine goals and conceded four, ending the tournament with a +5 goal difference to secure the top spot and lift the trophy.

Suhum Hockey Club placed second with six points from three matches, recording two wins and one defeat.

They scored six goals and finished with a +2 goal difference, with their loss to the eventual champions proving decisive.

Hosts Ho Hockey Club finished third after drawing two of their matches and failing to register a win.

They ended the tournament with two points and a -3 goal difference.

Citizens International Hockey Club placed fourth with one point, managing a single draw and scoring just one goal in the competition.

Chairman of Ho Hockey Club, Mr. William Agbenu, described the tournament as exciting and urged players to remain committed to the sport despite challenges.

He emphasised the importance of sustaining interest and building strong networks to enhance the growth of hockey, noting that the sport has the potential to create opportunities if properly supported.

“To the athletes, we shouldn’t belittle the little beginnings we are witnessing today, and let’s keep the networks going so that we will derive the maximum benefits” he said.

“I got a job primarily because of hockey” The sport creates opportunities, but without adequate support, it will eventually die,” he noted.

Ho Hockey Club also used the occasion to honour Mr Albert Ofori and Mr Lawrence Agyemfra for their dedication and contributions to the development of hockey in the region.

The Johnson Ofori Memorial Tournament continues to serve as a platform for major hockey tournaments in and outside the region to compete and celebrate the legacy of a man whose impact on hockey in the Volta Region remains significant.

This is the second time Koforidua Hockey Club has lifted the trophy, following Citizen International Hockey Club’s triumph in the maiden edition.
