Liverpool  Football Club have announced that Diogo Jota’s No. 20 shirt will be immortalized in honor of his vital contributions to the club’s 2024/25 Premier League title-winning campaign, the club’s 20th league triumph. The decision follows the tragic death of the 28-year-old forward in a car accident in Spain alongside his brother André Silva, an event that has deeply affected the Liverpool family and fans worldwide.

In a statement, Liverpool described the gesture as a “fitting homage” to Jota, who was celebrated for his clutch performances and decisive goals, including the strike that sealed victory in April’s Merseyside derby. The club emphasized Jota’s impact both on and off the pitch, noting his role in Liverpool’s success and his beloved status among supporters.

The announcement came amid widespread calls from fans on social media and at Anfield urging Liverpool to retire the No. 20 shirt permanently. Supporters expressed that seeing another player wear Jota’s number would be “wrong” and that immortalizing the jersey would honor his legacy in a way that resonates emotionally with the Liverpool community. A petition to retire the number was also launched shortly after news of his death.

Liverpool’s tribute coincides with the club opening a book of condolence at Anfield, allowing fans to pay their respects in person and online. The club’s directors and owners have issued heartfelt statements mourning the loss, while also asking for privacy for Jota’s grieving family during this difficult time. Sporting director Hughes and CEO of Football Edwards reflected on the collective grief, calling Jota “truly irreplaceable” and reaffirming the club’s commitment to honoring his memory.

Diogo Jota’s No. 20 shirt will now stand as a permanent symbol of his dedication, talent, and the joy he brought to Liverpool fans. The club’s decision to immortalize the jersey ensures that his legacy will endure, reminding future generations of a player who was not only a key contributor to Liverpool’s historic 20th league title but also a cherished member of the Liverpool family.
