The Minority Caucus in Parliament has donated GH¢100,000 to the national women’s football team, the Black Queens, in recognition of their impressive performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they secured a bronze medal.

The gesture, announced on the floor of Parliament, by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is aimed at celebrating the team’s resilience and outstanding achievement on the continental stage.

“This is our way of showing appreciation to the Black Queens for making Ghana proud,” said Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Women in sports must be encouraged in all spheres, not only in football.

“Mr. speaker, it is clear that so far we have been hearing words or encouragement, so we in the Minority, we are donating GHC 100,000 to support the women.” “Despite the challenges, they fought with heart and brought home a medal. They deserve more than just applause.”

The Black Queens’ third-place finish at WAFCON 2024 marked a significant return to form for the team, reigniting national pride and calls for increased investment in women’s football.

The Minority Caucus also urged the government and the corporate sector to offer more support to female athletes and prioritize the development of women’s sports in Ghana.
