The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has announced plans to acquire pitch covers for Ghana’s major sports stadia to combat ongoing maintenance challenges.

The move comes after several national stadia were recently declared unfit to host matches, primarily due to the lack of protective covers and poor field upkeep.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah acknowledged that the absence of pitch covers had been overlooked in the past but reassured the public that corrective measures are now underway.

“We are in the process of acquiring pitch covers for our stadia. In the past, maybe it was an oversight, and that is why we don’t have some at the moment, but for now, we are making arrangements to get some,” he explained.

The initiative aims to preserve the quality and condition of the playing surfaces, helping to avoid the deterioration that has marred Ghanaian sports pitches in recent years.

Ampofo Ankrah emphasized the importance of protecting these facilities to maintain their usability and appeal for both players and fans.

The pitch covers will be rolled out across key venues, including the Accra Sports Stadium, Aliu Mahama Stadium, Essipong Sports Stadium, Baba Yara Stadium, and Cape Coast Stadium.

These improvements are expected to enhance the standards of Ghanaian sports infrastructure significantly. With this development, the NSA hopes to ensure that the nation’s stadia remain ready and safe for hosting important local and international sporting events.
