While the Black Queens’ owed bonuses have grabbed headlines, the Black Princesses are quietly battling a tougher challenge: missing per diems from their recent 2026 U20 World Cup qualifier trip to Tunisia.
Grueling travel itinerary tests young players’ limits
The journey to Sfax was a marathon. Mostly teenagers, the Princesses endured flights through five cities, Lagos, Cotonou, Istanbul, and Tunis, followed by a 3.5-hour bus ride, arriving just a day before the match with barely any rest.
Triumph against Tunisia defies adversity
Despite the travel hardships and minimal recovery time, only 30 minutes on the pitch, the team secured a commanding 2-0 victory, repeating the feat in Accra to advance confidently to the next qualifying round against South Africa.
Twelve-hour layover adds to fatigue on return trip
The return journey was no easier, featuring a grueling 12-hour stopover at Istanbul Airport, further draining the players before they finally landed back in Accra.
Youth team per diems remain unpaid despite camp obligations
Unlike bonuses which are occasionally withheld, players depend on per diems $100 daily to cover essentials and commuting during camp. These payments, crucial for their upkeep, remain unsettled even after the trip.
Players forced to borrow money just to get home
Upon returning to Accra, many players were sent straight home without receiving their per diems, forcing some to borrow funds from coaches to cover transportation costs.
Financial woes threaten upcoming WAFU B Championship participation
Now called up for the upcoming WAFU B Girls Championship camp, several Princesses report lacking the funds to travel to Accra, posing a real risk to their availability and preparation.
A call for fair support to empower future champions
The Black Princesses have showcased resilience and talent on the field but need fair financial treatment off it to continue their journey. Addressing these lingering issues is critical to sustaining their growth and success.
