The acquisition of building permits has been moved onto a digital platform following the launch of the permit process system.

The system, which provides an electronic database of all building and construction permit records, allows citizens to personally input data on the services they need, make payments and track the status of their application from the comfort of their homes.

The Minister of Local Government and rural development, Hajia Alima Mahama who launched the digital system said the PPS will reduce corruption as there is less human to human contact especially during this period of COVID-19.

The acquisition of building permits has for years remained a challenge to some homeowners due to the long processes one has to go through and the fact that some officers extort exorbitant amounts from people without rendering any accounts to the assemblies.

The PPS which has for some months been running alongside the manual permit acquisition process is to deal with these difficulties and ensure transparency. Although it is not clear when the system will be rolled out nationwide, Hajia Alima Mahama asked contractors, developers and the public to make absolute use of the platform.

The Deputy Country Director of DFID who are the project partners, Carine Escoffier-Roberts said despite dropping from the World Banks ranking of countries with ease of doing business the new PPS has the potential of improving Ghana’s rank.

The system is being piloted in Accra and Tema and was developed by software developing firm, KOWAM SYSTEMS. It can be accessed on www.buildingpermitsgh.org/permits/cpp/home
