MTN Ghana has revealed that it will gradually phase out its 2G and 3G networks to give customers enough time to transition to modern technology.
Speaking at the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett admitted that a considerable number of subscribers still rely on the older networks.
He noted that while some customers intentionally stay on 2G or 3G to better manage their data use, many others are limited by devices that cannot support 4G.
“Despite the widespread availability of 4G, a lot of our customers are still on 3G. For some, it is about managing their data consumption, while others are constrained by devices that cannot support 4G,” Mr Blewett said.
He explained that the company’s long-term strategy is to enhance spectrum efficiency by eventually shutting down outdated networks, but the process will be handled cautiously.
“We cannot simply switch off 2G and 3G without ensuring that affordable 4G devices are within reach. Doing so would risk excluding a large number of Ghanaians,” he cautioned.
