The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has warned citizens about the risks of registering SIM cards for other people, especially if those SIMs are later used for fraudulent activities.

“If a SIM card registered under your Ghana Card is linked to mobile money fraud, your card will be flagged and potentially blocked. Do not register for anybody; everyone has a Ghana Card, let them go and register themselves,” he said.

Addressing the media on March 17, the minister emphasised that if a Ghana Card is used to register multiple SIM cards involved in fraud, it could be blocked, preventing the holder from registering new SIMs.

He urged citizens to register SIM cards only for themselves or their dependants, as the government seeks to sanitise the system and protect vulnerable individuals.

The upcoming registration process will include a liveliness test to verify identities and curb fraudulent activities. Individuals who acquired SIM cards through fraudulent means may face challenges during registration, as the system is expected to flag suspicious activity.

Mr Sam George encouraged law-abiding citizens to comply with the process, while warning those engaged in mobile money fraud that their SIM cards will be blocked. He said the government is prioritising the security and integrity of the telecommunications system.
