Nigerian actor and model Alexx Ekubo has died at the age of 40.
News of his death was announced on Tuesday, May 12, by fellow actor Godwin Nnadiekwe in an emotional post on Instagram.
“I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alexx Ekubo,” Nnadiekwe wrote.
He added: “To think you already prepared your will, it’s a heartbreak I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.”
Sources close to the actor told Nigerian media that Ekubo had been receiving treatment after battling kidney cancer.
He was reportedly rushed to hospital on Monday and died on Tuesday after spending several hours on life support.
Alexx Ekubo, born Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, was one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces. He rose to prominence after finishing as first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition and went on to feature in numerous hit films, including Weekend Getaway, In the Cupboard, Lagos Cougars, The First Lady and A Sunday Affair.
Known for his charisma, fashion sense and versatility on screen, Ekubo built a successful career spanning more than a decade and earned several awards and nominations.
His prolonged absence from social media in recent months had sparked concerns among fans, although colleagues had earlier dismissed rumours that he was seriously ill.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, friends and fans across Africa, many describing him as a talented actor, humanitarian and a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.
He is remembered for his contributions to Nollywood and for the warmth and charm that endeared him to audiences across the continent.
