The Group Executive Director of the African Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA, Policy Network in Ghana, Louis Yaw Afful has called on Ghanaian farmers to form cooperatives in order to meet the demands of the African continental free trade market.
Mr. Afull was speaking at a farmers’ forum in Accra, which looked how to address the challenges along the agricultural value chain.
He said agencies of the Ministry of Trade have a lot of incentives for agro-based entities to maximize the benefits under the AfCFTA market.
He said so far, two Ghanaian companies have begun exporting to other countries under AfCFTA.
The Head of programs and advocacy of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, Dr. Charles Nyaaba advocated more research into agriculture to bridge the crop yield gap and increase productivity.
He said there is the need get the youth into farming by making funding readily available for that purpose.
