Ghana is said to be losing an average of four meters of its shore lines to the sea annually. This according to experts, calls for immediate action by earmarking places for fishing and other related activities to ensure that fishermen do not lose their livelihood.
This came up at a stakeholder’s engagement organized by implementers of “Far Dwuma Nkodo”, Environmental Justice Foundation and “Hen Mpoano”.
Meanwhile, the Fisheries Commission, says canoes without identification numbers would soon be prevented from fishing in Ghanaian waters.
The Commission said it has completed the canoe identification exercise and their cards already printed out.
What is left is management issues and engagement with the canoe owners on the implications of not having the identification number.
This was disclosed at an engagement section with Chief fishermen, leadership of fishmongers, traditional leaders and stakeholders in the Central Regional capital, Cape Coast by the Environmental Justice Foundation and “Hen Mpoano” under the “Far Dwuma Nkodo” project.
The engagement among other things, was to share with the stakeholders results of geographic information and survey works on all the fish landing sites in the region.
