The Parliament of Ghana says it is working with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the Netherlands following reports that the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the House confirmed that it had been informed of the incident involving the independent lawmaker.

According to the statement, the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House are in contact with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague to obtain detailed information about the circumstances surrounding the detention.

“The Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter,” the statement said.

Parliament did not provide details about the reasons for Mr Frimpong’s detention or indicate whether any charges have been brought against him.

The development has drawn attention within political circles and among residents of Asante Akyem North as officials seek to establish the facts of the case.

Kwame Ohene Frimpong was sworn into Parliament on January 7, 2025, after winning the constituency seat as an independent candidate in the 2024 general election.

His victory was considered one of the major surprises of the election, as he defeated former New Patriotic Party MP, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi.

Before entering politics, Mr Frimpong was known as an entrepreneur and philanthropist with business interests in Ghana.

Born on September 23, 1986, he is one of the few independent members in the current Parliament.

No further official information has been released regarding his situation in the Netherlands.
