The Northern Regional Health Directorate is the latest institution in Tamale to be hit by the covid-19 pandemic, after the Tamale Teaching Hospital, the Tamale Old Hospital and the Passport office.

At least six staff of the health Directorate have contracted the virus.

A source at the Directorate told GBCGHANAONLINE that the development has caused anxiety among staff, with some calling for the closure of the Directorate for disinfection.

The Northern Regional Health Director, Dr. John Eleeza, who confirmed the news, has however moved to calm the anxiety among staff.

He explained that, the infection is restricted to a particular office at the Directorate and that, the affected staff have been asked to self-isolate.

He said the Directorate has taken steps to prevent the spread of the disease within the Directorate.

The Northern Region recorded its first case of the pandemic on March 29, with some ten foreign Nationals who allegedly entered the country through unapproved routes.

The region now has 271 cases with nine deaths.

Over ninety percent of infections in the region are now community infections.
