Despite the negative impact of Covid-19 on the World economy, prices of Gold have soared on the International Market favouring mineral producing companies especially Gold Mining entities in Ghana. As such government intends to impose what the General Mine Workers Union says is a windfall tax.

General Secretary of the Union, Abdul Moomen Gbanaa said instead of imposing a windfall tax on the mining companies, government should rather consider allowing such companies to expand infrastructure to employ more workers in the industry.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, Mr. Gbanaa bemoaned the lack of support from governments when Ghanaian workers are being cheated especially where private employment companies do not want to take responsibility. He said the trend has become entrenched and the rights of workers for decent work and decent pay are not working in the country.

Mr. Gbanaa said the situation must stop.
