The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has set up a committee to investigate the rising cost of hostel accommodation in tertiary institutions across the country.
The move follows growing concerns from students and parents, who say increasing hostel fees are placing significant financial pressure on families and making it difficult for many students to secure accommodation.
The Minister announced the formation of the committee during the swearing-in ceremony of the Governing Council of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences.
According to him, the committee will work with the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and vice-chancellors of public universities to engage stakeholders and recommend measures to address the issue.
“There is a committee which will work with the Ministry of Education, GTEC and the vice-chancellors of the universities. We will convene to deliberate further and consult stakeholders to find an amicable solution to this matter,” he said.
Mr Iddrisu stressed that the government would not allow market forces alone to determine accommodation prices in the tertiary education sector.
“Be assured that the government will not allow unrestricted market principles to dictate the pace,” he added.
The development comes amid increasing public concern over the cost of tertiary education, with accommodation remaining one of the major challenges facing students across the country. The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has set up a committee to investigate the rising cost of hostel accommodation in tertiary institutions across the country.
