The Ghana Government as part of efforts to manage plastic wastes in the country, has set up a plastic levy.
Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, disclosed this on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, when he took his turn at the at the Meet the Press Series in Accra.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said a bank account has been created whereby persons who import plastic products into the country will be made to pay an amount of money into towards the management of plastic wastes.
He cautioned against what he described as ‘wholesale’ ban of plastic bags in Ghana.
Adding that: “In managing plastics, we think that the wholesale ban will not be in the interest of the nation.”
The Minister stressed that it will not be prudent for Ghana to at this time ban plastic materials.
He argued that plastic products were not bad but managing it was the problem.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said the new policy on plastic waste management will be based on five focal points; ‘attitudinal change, governance, and cross-sectorial collaboration.’
