Brazilian forward Joao Pedro has been named Chelsea’s Men’s Player of the Season for 2025–26, a recognition that comes just after his shock exclusion from Brazil’s 26‑man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Pedro’s breakout season at Chelsea

In his first campaign after joining from Brighton & Hove Albion for a deal reported around £60 million, Pedro has scored 20 goals and provided nine assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, making him Chelsea’s most prolific attacker.

His performances helped Chelsea win the inaugural, expanded FIFA Club World Cup, where they beat Paris Saint‑Germain 3‑0 in the final, and he was emphatically voted Player of the Season by Chelsea supporters.

Snub from Brazil’s World Cup squad

Despite his form, new Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti opted not to include Joao Pedro in the final squad for the 2026 World Cup, alongside Chelsea teammate Andrey Santos and other notable names such as Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus.

Ancelotti instead included Neymar Jr of Santos FC, who was a surprise pick after a modest club season of six goals and four assists in 15 appearances, underscoring the competitive depth and selection debates in Brazil’s attacking options.

The contrast between Pedro’s domestic acclaim and international omission highlights how club form does not always guarantee a place in Brazil’s stacked attacking pool, but also cements his status as Chelsea’s standout performer of the season.
