The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu says Parliament has not taken a firm decision on the proposed new Chamber.
The Majority Leader said this at a Media Encounter today (July 4) in Accra, to respond to widespread public outcry and reactions since the announcement of the proposed new chamber for Parliament last Friday (June 28).
Enumerating some of the reasons for a new chamber, Mr Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu explained that it is to provide adequate space for Parliamentarians, tighten security and also ensure that elected Presidents are sworn-in before Parliament instead of the Black Star Square.
He added that pillars in the current chamber block MPs from being seen and heard by the Speaker.
The Majority Leader however assured the public that the decision is not final.
The planned construction was announced last Friday (June 28), when members of the Parliamentary Service Board received a model for the proposed 450-capacity chamber.
The new chamber is expected to have diplomatic offices, a library, a museum, a church, a mosque, press conference rooms, eateries, galleries, a car park, an upper gallery garden, a post office and other facilities to complete the Parliamentary enclave.
