The Ashanti region is presenting a total of 127,000 candidates for this year’s West African Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the highest in Ghana. Female candidates dominate the statistics with 69,817, representing 12,115 more than their male colleagues.

All the candidates wrote their first general paper, which was Oral English language, on Monday, May 13, three weeks after the start of the practical exams by some of them, particularly those pursuing Home Economics and Visual Arts.

The Asokore Mampong Municipality is one of the political districts with the highest number of participating schools, apart from the Kumasi Metropolis with more than 3, 000 candidates.

Candidates from the schools with large candidate numbers such as the Kumasi Academy, had to write the examinations in batches for lack of space and also for effective supervision.

One female candidate reportedly wrote the examination while pregnant under calm conditions, with support from examination officials.

The Municipal Examinations Officer, Alhaji Haruna Awudu Iddrisu, in an interview with GBC, disclosed that, about four of the expected candidates were absent for the Oral English Paper with two of them, a boy and a girl from the Sakafia Islamic Senior High School reported as invalid candidates with the other two said to have traveled before the start of the examination.

According to him, day one of the exam saw candidates, officials and materials arrive on time, an improved situation than observed during the just ended BECE in the Municipality.

For health emergencies, Alhaji Iddrisu said all the participating schools have sick bays with resident professional nurses to cater for eventualities.

The Municipal Examinations Officer advised the candidates, the officials and all others with a part to play in the conduct of the exams to conduct themselves within the regulations to ensure success of the exercise.
