A sod-cutting ceremony has been held in Sogakope in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region, for the construction of a new “ultra-modern” sports complex.
The sports complex project is aimed at strengthening youth development through sport and boosting local economic activity in the area.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Tongu, Maxwell Kwame Lukutor who led the ceremony alongside local authorities, traditional leaders, and residents described the initiative as an important step toward improving sporting infrastructure across the Tongu districts.
The planned facility is estimated at more than GH¢30 million, it will include a football pitch, athletics track, basketball and volleyball courts, and a standard swimming pool.
Additional features outlined by the MP include conference halls, hostel facilities, and a children’s play area, forming part of a proposed 6,000-capacity FIFA-standard stadium.

Speaking at the event, Mr Lukutor urged residents to support the project.
He disclosed that the first phase of construction will begin with a perimeter fence, costing nearly GH¢2 million, while preparatory works such as land demarcation, site clearing, and a 3D stadium design have already been completed.
“This is a constituency project, and I call on all constituents to come on board as we work together to push South Tongu forward in sports and economic development,” he said,
He added that the initiative aims to transform the long-abandoned Gomido Park into a modern, multi-purpose facility.
The South Tongu District Chief Executive, Victoria Dzeklo, also welcomed the development and raised concerns about potential land disputes that could delay progress.
She stressed that any grievances should be handled through appropriate local channels rather than escalated prematurely.
A representative of the Tongu Chiefs’ Union who spoke on behalf of Togbega Kadzi Zogah warned that disputes could hinder development but assured that chiefs would work to prevent any disruptions.
“The project will proceed without litigation. The chiefs will not allow any hindrances,” he said.
He emphasised the role of sports in creating opportunities for young people and supporting the local economy.
The sports complex is intended not only to nurture athletic talent but also to serve as a venue for community events and tourism, positioning Sogakope as a growing destination in the region.
Construction of the sports complex is expected to begin in the coming months.
