Deputy Director-General of Ghana’s National Sports Authority, Veronica Commey, has strongly rejected claims of poor feeding arrangements at the ongoing 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships, describing the reports as misleading and untrue. Speaking at a press conference, she insisted that organisers have made adequate provisions for all participating athletes throughout the competition.
NSA Responds To Athletes’ Complaints Over Food
The response from the NSA follows criticism from some athletes regarding feeding conditions at the championships. South African shot put athlete Aiden Smith had publicly expressed disappointment after alleging that he was served only one chicken bone during a meal. The comments quickly gained attention on social media and sparked wider discussions about athlete welfare at the tournament.
Veronica Commey Says Reports Were Independently Verified
Addressing the issue directly, Veronica Commey stated that investigations conducted by the Local Organising Committee found no evidence to support the allegations of food rationing. According to her, the claims had been independently checked and proven to be false. She maintained that organisers remain committed to ensuring athletes receive proper treatment and support during the championship.
NSA Also Rejects Pole Vault Equipment Allegations
The NSA official also denied reports surrounding damaged pole vault equipment during the competition. Concerns emerged after some athletes experienced snapped vaults while competing, with reports suggesting that the equipment had been supplied by organisers. Veronica Commey firmly dismissed the narrative, explaining that the vaults used during the event belong to the athletes themselves and were not provided by the organisers.
Organisers Defend Championship Preparations
Despite the controversies, organisers of the championships continue to defend the overall management of the event. The competition, being staged in Accra, has attracted athletes from across the continent and remains one of Africa’s biggest athletics gatherings. Officials say efforts are ongoing to ensure the championship proceeds smoothly while addressing concerns raised by participants.
