China, US commit to stable bilateral relations after high level talks

President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed China’s commitment to rebuilding stable and constructive relations with the United States following high level talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing.

President Xi Jinping said the renewed engagegement between the two countries could help reshape bilateral relations and overcome what he described as the “Thucydides Trap,” a political concept often used to explain tensions between rising and established global powers.

Speaking at the Great Hall of the People of China on Thursday, May 14, 2026, President Xi Jinping stressed China’s commitment to maintaining steady, sound and sustainable relations with the United States.

“I have agreed with President Trump on a new vision of building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability. This will provide  strategic guidance for China-US relations over the next three years and beyond, and will be well received by the people of both countries and the international community” President Xi said.

He described “constructive strategic stability” as cooperation anchored on mutal respect, manageable competition and peaceful coexistence.

He said building  a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability is not just a slogan but a call to actions in the same direction.

China-US Economic Cooperation

On China-US trade relations, President Xi said ties between the two countries are mutually beneficial and inherently win-win, stressing that consultation on equal footing remains the only right choice.

“Where disagreements and frictions exists, equal footed consultation is the only right choice” President Xi noted.

He called for swift actions to ensure economic stability for the two countries in order to sustain the good momentum that they have worked hard to create.

“Yesterday, our economic and trade teams produced generally balanced and positive outcomes. This is good news for the people of the two countries  and the world. The two sides should jointly sustain the good momentum that we have worked hard to create” President Xi Jinping said.

He urged both countries to implement important common agreements reached and make use of communication channels  in political, diplomatic and military-to-military-fields.

President Xi further called for collaboration and exchanges in the economy and trade, health, agriculture, tourism,  people-to-people ties and law enforcement.

Tawain Strait

President Xi said Tawain remained critical in China-U.S relation and called for proper handling of issues to ensure overall stability of bilateral relations. Otherwise, the two countries he noted, will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy

Trump touts meeting with Xi Jinping as biggest summit the world is watching

For his part President Donald Trump said his meeting with Xi is the biggest summit the world is watching and commended Xi Jinping and the people of China for the great honour.

He pledged his commitment to strengthening communication and cooperation between US and China.

“I will work together with President Xi to strengthen communication and cooperation, properly handle differences, make bilateral relations better than ever before and embrace a fantastic future…”  President Donald Trump said.
