Following a successful crackdown on fake and expired number plates, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced it will soon embark on a major enforcement campaign against expired and forged vehicle documents, warning that offenders will face arrest and prosecution.
Addressing the media, Director of Vehicle Inspection and Registration, Kwesi Bona Otoo Serebuor, explained that a temporary extension granted in December last year for the use of 2025 DV plates and DP stickers became invalid following the introduction of the 2026 DV plates in February this year. Despite this, many motorists continue to use expired plates and fraudulent documentation.

”Between March 24 and April 16, 2026, a total of 707 vehicles were inspected across the three main operational zones. Tema recorded 187 inspections with relatively higher compliance, including 78 vehicles verified with original 2026 DV plates. Adenta office recorded 338 inspections and 148 out of them were having expired 2025 DV plate. The Narhman office also recorded 181 inspections and had also the highest of expired DP stickers with 34 cases,” he analysed.
“The DVLA expressed concern that previous enforcement efforts have failed to deter offenders, noting repeated arrests at the same locations. As a result, the Authority announced that effective 4th of next month, stricter measures will be used.
”It looks like people are not getting deterred from non-compliance and engaging in illegal activities such as using faked or forged DP or DV plates on their vehicles. Accordingly, the authority wishes to announce that effective May 4, 2026, enforcement measures will be intensified. The DVLA compliance team in collaboration with the NTTD will proceed to arrest and prosecute individuals found operating vehicles with 2025 DV plates, forged 2026 DV plates, as part of faked DP stickers‘’ he warned.

The Authority has urged all vehicle owners to regularise their documentation, stressing that the use of forged plates is an offence under the Road Traffic Act.
